Roof Top Tents are becoming increasingly popular, but they must only be carried on suitable vehicles, with suitable roof bars. This page explains the minimum roof bar requirements to carry a roof tent.
You also need to check that the fittings that are supplied with your roof tent work with the bars that you decide to go for.
Minimum dynamic (driving) weight carrying capacity
Your vehicle AND your roof bars must have a minimum dynamic (driving) weight carrying capacity of 75kg.
If your tent weighs more than 75kg, the minimum weight capacity of both your vehicle AND your roof bars must be equal to or greater than the weight of the tent.
Check the instructions for your roof bars components to find the weight capacity. You must check all components (e.g. bar, foot pack and adapter kit) and use the lowest figure.
Types of roof bars
Roof tents can only be mounted to certain types of roof bars - please consult the information below, where we have listed all the types of roof bar that we sell.
You must check the weight limit shown in the instructions for ALL of the components (the roof bars, fitting kit and foot pack) using the LOWEST figure.
Vehicle suitability
Roof Top Tents must only be carried on suitable vehicles. There is a separate article detailing which types of vehicle are suitable.
