When driving in France, we are likely to encounter two of the country's winter driving laws: the 'chaînes à neige obligatoires' (B26 sign) and the 'Loi Montagne II' (B58/B59 signs). We can confirm that AutoSock meets the requirements for both the B26 and the B58/B59 signs in France.
Here are a few extra details about the requirements.
The B26 Sign:
- This sign continues to mean that, on snow-covered roads, including outside the winter period, the wearing, and not simply the possession, of snow chains or AutoSock is mandatory. However, if the sign is also accompanied by the words “pneus neige admis / snow tyres allowed” then you may continue if you have a full set of certified winter tyres fitted. These must be 3PMSF winter tyres displaying the three peaks mountain snow flake logo. A set of standard Mud + Snow / M+S tyres without the additional 3PMSF logo is not an acceptable alternative. However in severe weather, snow chains or AutoSock must be fitted even if you have a full set of 3PMSF winter tyres, so it’s advisable for all vehicles to carry snow chains or AutoSock so that you do not find yourself in difficulty or are instructed to turn around.
- The B26 indicates a temporary, situational requirement for snow chains or AutoSock when driving through snowy or icy conditions, regardless of whether your vehicle has winter tyres or not. You only need to comply with the B26 sign when it is visibly displayed during hazardous winter weather. The sign generally applies to areas where sudden snowfalls make the use of snow chains or AutoSock necessary.
The B58/B59 Sign:
- The B58 / B59 establishes seasonal regulations. It marks zones where, from 1st November to 31st March, all vehicles must be equipped with either a full set of 3PMSF winter tyres (please note that from 01 November 2024, Mud + Snow / M+S tyres are no longer acceptable unless also marked with the 3PMSF / three peaks mountain snow flake logo), or be carrying snow chains or AutoSock. This requirement applies throughout the entire period, regardless of actual weather conditions.
- For areas marked by B58 / B59 signs, ensure you have either a full set of 3PMSF winter tyres or are carrying a suitable set of snow chains or AutoSock throughout the winter season.
On the map below, the departments shown in blue show which French departments have at least one road marked with the B58/B59 signs. It is advisable that those driving to or through these departments carry a suitable set of snow chains or AutoSock so that you do not find yourself in difficulty or face a fine.
